About Danakil Depression

The Danakil Depression is one of the most extraordinary and inhospitable places on Earth — a vast geological depression in the Afar region of northeastern Ethiopia, sitting 125 meters below sea level and recording some of the highest average temperatures ever measured anywhere on the planet.

Created at the junction of three tectonic plates that are slowly pulling apart, the Danakil is geologically one of the most active places on Earth. The result is a landscape unlike anything else — neon yellow and green sulfur fields, active lava lakes, and vast salt flats worked by Afar salt miners using methods unchanged for thousands of years.

Despite being one of the harshest environments on Earth, the Danakil has been inhabited for millennia by the Afar people — nomadic herders who have adapted to survive in extreme heat with minimal water.

Top Things to Do in Danakil Depression

01
Erta Ale Lava Lake

One of only a handful of permanent lava lakes in the world. Trek overnight to reach the crater rim and watch molten lava churn in the darkness. Completely unforgettable.

02
Dallol Sulfur Springs

The most alien landscape on Earth — vivid yellow, green, and orange sulfur formations bubbling with acid hot springs. The area around Dallol averages the highest annual temperature ever recorded.

03
Lake Asale Salt Flats

A vast expanse of crystalline white salt flats at the heart of the Danakil. Watch Afar salt miners carve blocks of salt by hand and load them onto camel caravans.

04
Afar Salt Caravans

Ancient camel caravans still transport salt from Lake Asale to highland markets — a trade that has continued for over 1,000 years. Witnessing them at dawn is magical.

05
Yellow Lake

A strikingly colored brine lake surrounded by sulfur formations and salt crusts in vivid shades of yellow and orange — one of the most photographed spots in Ethiopia.

06
Afar Village Visit

Meet members of the Afar people — one of the world's most resilient communities — and learn about their nomadic traditions and extraordinary adaptation to extreme conditions.
