About Lalibela
Lalibela is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Nestled in the highlands of northern Ethiopia, this small town contains one of humanity's most extraordinary architectural achievements — 11 medieval rock-hewn churches carved directly into the living volcanic rock over 800 years ago.
Named after King Gebre Meskel Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty, who commissioned the churches in the 12th and 13th centuries, the town is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities and a major pilgrimage destination for Orthodox Christians worldwide. Legend holds that the churches were built with the help of angels — and standing before them, it is easy to believe.
Lalibela was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. It remains a living, functioning religious site — priests chant morning Mass in Ge'ez, an ancient liturgical language, every single day.

How to Get to Lalibela
The easiest way is to fly from Addis Ababa to Lalibela Airport (LLI). Ethiopian Airlines operates daily flights taking around 45 minutes. It is also possible to fly from Gondar or Axum as part of a northern circuit. Book in advance as flights fill up quickly, especially during Timkat season in January.
Best Time to Visit
October to March is the dry season and the best time to visit Lalibela. The rainy season (June–September) makes some trails muddy and views hazy. January is spectacular for the Timkat festival but requires booking accommodation 6+ months in advance.
